Awa Aidara-Kane, MD, PhD, is a coordinator in the Department of Food Safety and Zoonosis, World Health Organization (WHO), and the lead in the WHO Advisory Group on Integrated Surveillance of Antimicrobial Resistance (AGISAR), Geneva, Switzerland.
She previously worked at the Pasteur Institute of Dakar from 1985 - 1997. She was the scientific director of the Laboratory of Food Hygiene and Environment, with a focus on phenotypic and genotypic characterization of enteric and foodborne pathogens. She joined the WHO in 2002, and currently coordinates WHO's activities on containment of foodborne antimicrobial resistance. Dr. Aidara-Kane and the AGISAR have been a key GOHi partner in the joint funding of antimicrobial resistance research and capacity building activities in eastern Africa (Kenya, Ethiopia and Tanzania).
