External Advisory Board member spotlight: Melanie Newport

Melanie Newport, MBBS, PhD, FRCP, is a professor of infectious disease and global health at Brighton and Sussex Medical School at the University of Sussex. There, she has led the strategic development of global health, establishing a research program which takes a multidisciplinary approach to tackle conditions that disproportionately affect vulnerable communities living in low-income countries.

Her research focuses on tropical diseases (both infectious and non-communicable), investigating the genetic basis of podoconiosis (non-filarial elephantiasis), a neglected tropical disease that contributes to significant morbidity and poverty in affected populations. She also serves as the director of the Wellcome Trust Brighton and Sussex Centre for Global Health and research director of the NIHR Global Health Research Unit on Neglected Tropical Diseases.
