GOHi core leadership team including Emia Oppenheim, PhD, operations director, Getnet Yimer, MD, PhD, regional director for eastern Africa, and Wondwossen Gebreyes, DVM, PhD, executive director, participated in the Gates Foundation Grand Challenges Summit in Berlin, Germany. It featured exhibits, speakers, panels and discussions with the greatest potential of innovation and science to address today’s “most urgent global challenges.”
Several topics relevant to global One Health issues, such as antimicrobial resistance, research and training capacity building on clinical trials, surveillance and One Health and others, were major focus areas of the summit. The summit highlighted the significance of One Health.
The notable activities included a plenary discussion among key leaders including Chancellor Angela Merkel of Germany, Bill Gates, World Health Organization Director General Tedros Ghebreyesus and Prime Minister Erna Solberg of Norway.
GOHi’s participation was sponsored by the Gates Foundation Grand Challenges office. The 2019 Grand Challenges Summit will convene in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, the home of the African Union and GOHi eastern Africa regional office.
