We are saddened by the passing of two wonderful One Health supporters, partners and leaders from Ethiopia this past month, but are honored to have known and worked with Professor Getachew Tilahun and former President of Ethiopia, His Excellency Girma Woldegiorgis.
Tilahun was a renowned parasitologist and founding member of our Global One Health initiative in 2009. He served as a colleague, key contact and leader for Aklilu Lema Institute of Pathobiology and also a co-investigator in our
One Health Eastern Africa Research Training Program. Tilahun was a great mentor to our former NIH Fogarty fellows. He also participated in our regional activities including our One Health Meta-leadership workshop convened in Arusha, Tanzania in 2012.
Former President of Ethiopia, His Excellency Girma Woldegiorgis was a firm and consistent supporter of the establishment of the Ohio State Global One Health entity in Ethiopia since the initial discussion to open an office in Addis Ababa. He met with GOHi’s executive director and university leaders including deans and vice provosts in 2011 - 2012 to help the project get started. His office committed itself for the launching of the inaugural ICOPHAI congress in 2011 and hosted GOHi partners for a dinner reception at the Presidential Palace. Let us honor the memory and legacy of these important One Health leaders by continuing to build on their notable contributions.
